Something to think about

Today Mark Salinas posted this about how we should not let things like politics ruin friendships.

I agree wholeheartedly with what he had to say in his very timely post. As I read through the comments though, someone else had something very profound to say.

Audra Krell from Krellfish said, "One other point is for people to look inward. As we get closer to the election, people become desperate and do and say things that they normally wouldn’t. We should all do an emotional check and see if possibly, our fears and other emotions are coloring our words and actions a little too much."

So far, in most of our conversations - those on the opposite side of the political fence have been able to have civil conversations with me, even when we disagree. And then there have been those times where I just wanted to enjoy being with my friend and I've said, "let's not talk politics today, okay?"

This election seems to be more charged than any other that I remember, and I hope that some people are not forgetting that we are all Americans and in the end - we have to all figure out how to work together whether we are liberal, conservative, democrat, republican or some combination of all of these things.

So in these last 2 weeks before the election I urge you to:
  • be informed and research everything - if a story seems biased, it probably is - so check the facts yourself
  • feel free to be passionate without being nasty
  • don't steal signs out of people's yards (I'd like mine back please!)
  • respect the opinions of others, whether you agree or not
  • Pray for our nation, its leaders - and whoever is destined to be our next President - we all have an uphill climb ahead of us.
Okay - political discussion done. For real this time. Maybe.

You put the perfect words out there--->"This election seems to be more charged than any other that I remember, and I hope that some people are not forgetting that we are all Americans and in the end - we have to all figure out how to work together whether we are liberal, conservative, democrat, republican or some combination of all of these things." Such a fantastic post and thank you for the mention!

Hi Izzybeth,
Yes, I agree with Mark, what a great post you have written. I read some of your other posts and was most struck by your words "God is still Good." Amen!!! No matter what, He is still good and He will always be God. You and I can sure agree on that. Thank you for mentioning me on your great blog. Blessings,
Audra Krell

A few days ago, I watched an eminent US political commentator interviewed on BBC Television, and though, unfortunately, I can't remember his name, I certainly remember his words, when he said that the biggest task any incoming US President will face over the coming years will be the education of the American people, with respect to their knowledge and understanding of the outside world, other counties, cultures and religions. His words struck a chord clearly with me, because I have long thought the same myself, and often wondered whether anyone in the USA had given any thought to that idea; I was pleasantly surprised that someone actually had, but, on the present showing, remarked to myself that it probably won't make any difference..

I have not followed this US Presidential Election closely, but even to me, here, in the UK, it is apparent that it is a very highly charged and polarised campaign, with much bitterness and division abroad. I have to say, it seems to me, that if America is so divided upon itself, and so obsessed with it's own internal wranglings and differences, there is little chance that such an education process would be noticed, let alone prove effective, even if it were attempted.

For what it's worth, as an Americanophile, (I don't know, is there such a word?), I would add my voice to those suggesting that Americans need to remember that they are one nation, and one nation with a political system that allows for differences of political perspective... isn't that what the War of Independence was fought for? Freedom and Liberty? America needs to elect a President, and America needs to settle down to working together, and begin to lose sight, quickly, of it's own navel..

As, arguably, the most powerful and wealthy nation on planet earth, America has a position of responsiblility in the world, like it or not, but if it can't resolve it's own internal differences, the opportunity for America to help make the world a better place will quickly be lost. So, vote for your beliefs, and in the process of doing so, and after there is a result, accept and respect the beliefs of your fellow countrymen and women.

I remember the line at the end of Its a great Pumpkin Charlie Brown..."Never discuss religion, politics, and the great pumpkin amongst friends..." This year we know why. I would much rather talk about how people can have abundant life.
